Have Fun And Make Your Own Sugar Crystals

Have Fun And Make Your Own Sugar Crystals

Also called rock candies, sugary crystals are sweet delights made of crystallized sugar. The crystals were created using sugar & water. Food color can be added to add color to the crystals. Making these crystallized sugars is quite easy & does not require lots of effort.

For making these sugary crystals, you’ll need the following materials:

1 c water
3 c sugar
Container
Stick/butter knife
Bowl
Yarn

Here’s how to grow delicious sugar crystals:

You’ll need to start things off by cultivating a starter crystal. It provides weight for your string then will serve as the surface where bigger crystals can develop. Get the butter or stick and tie yarn around it.

Put stick/knife at topmost portion of your jar. It’s better if you’re using yarn or cotton strings rather than nylon. This is because crystals don’t usually grow well on nylon strings. If there are no other strings available, just put a piece of seed crystal onto your nylon string to entice growth.

It’s also not good to use a fishing weight in holding yarn down in case you’d like to produce snackable bits out of your sugar crystals. Position the stick/knife in such a way that it won’t touch your container’s bottom. Now boil 1 c of water. You could use your microwave for faster boiling. Just be very careful when removing the cup from your microwave.

Put sugar, 1 teaspoon after the other, into your hot water. Keep doing this until the mixture starts to gather up at jar’s bottom. Be sure solution has been saturated enough. What this means is that sugar shouldn’t dissolve anymore in hot water even when you stir it vigorously, that is when it’s saturated enough.

The crystals won’t grow as fast as it should if you’re using an unsaturated formula. Be very careful not to put lots of sugar though. This will cause the crystals to form on your undiluted sugar instead of growing onto the piece of yarn.

You could make sugar crystals look more eye-catching by putting some food color on them. A couple of drops will do, which you’ll mix into your water & sugar solution. Pour solution into a another container afterwards. You may see some undiluted sugar remaining at jar’s bottom. This should not be placed together with your sugar solution inside its new glass container.

What you should do is to position your stick above your new glass container then have a piece of yarn make contact with your sugar solution. Store container where it’s cool and dry. Check up on your crystals 1 day after. You should now be seeing some discernible changes with the solution. Crystals must be allowed to grow to an appropriate size before they can be ready for consumption.
